OMG!

We may not have seen the last of The Nine Lives Of Chloe King on ABC Family. The network canceled the drama series about a girl with cat-like powers in September after one modestly rated season. But during this morning’s ABC Family executive session at TCA, the network’s president Michael Riley said that “we are on the verge of putting a (Chloe King) movie into development.” No details to announce on story, but the plan is “to capitalize on the storytelling that’s already been in place,” he said. Dan Berendsen (Hannah Montana: The Movie), who developed and executive produced the series, is on board to write the Chloe King movie. In talking about the series, Riley didn’t want to use the word canceled. “We didn’t cut it short — we never talk about canceling shows at ABC Family,” he said, referring to the fact that Chloe King completed its first-season run before the network opted not to go forward with Season 2. “We loved the cast; we loved the writing on that show. For us it was about making some decisions. We had to choose between what we thought was resonating stronger for the audience.” That would be the other 2 new ABC Family drama series that launched last summer, breakout hit Switched At Birth, which received a second-season pickup, and The Lying Game, which received a back-12 order after posting ratings similar to those for Chloe King.

Also during the session, Riley announced that The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Make It Or Break It will return with new episodes on March 26. ABC Family has 4 pilots in contention, dramas Bunheads, written by Amy Sherman-Palladino, and Intercept and comedies Village People, and Baby Daddy, penned by Berendsen. Word is that three of them, Intercept, Village People and Baby Daddy, are already in preliminary stages of staffing.

Sadly, ABC Family has decided to cancel the show we all love. I cannot express my sadness… I’m speechless.

Do you think Brian knows what his dad is really doing or not?

Grey Damon: Well, I know that Brian doesn’t. I think that’s a lot of what Brian’s story is about.

Skyler Samuels: I think Brian is definitely suspicious, though. Whitley is going through a big struggle on the show. He messed up. He made a mistake and he let people protect him. So by doing that, he made it harder to get a hold of me. Therefore, he’s on a personal vendetta. So, he’s nervous because he’s freaking out trying to get to Chloe King. So I think Whitley’s going to crack really soon. And the confrontation where Whitley confronts Brian and Brian finds out about Chloe, I think it’s all imminent.

Do you guys find it odd that in the gala scene where Whitley was standing right beside you and didn’t take the opportunity to kill you?

SS: He knows my name. The pivotal moment about that scene is I turn and I say, “Hi, I’m –” and he stalls. It’s that moment that saves my life. Because, if I had said, “I’m Chloe King,” I’m done. At the end of the season, you’ll see how all of the loose ends and strange looks all come together for a crazy explosion.

What’s going to happen with Chloe and Brian’s relationship? There’s a lot of complications there.

SS: We can’t get it right.

GD: In all fairness though, I think it actually kind of makes it more beautiful. There’s this tension that’s there and it really forces us not to jump into this adolescent, impulsive thing.

SS: I think Grey said it perfectly. It’s really eloquently put. In high school especially, there are those raging hormones. And it’s just when you are so attracted to someone, there’s that total impulsive feeling.

GD: You can’t control yourself.

SS: Chloe and Alek are the impulsive duo and Alek is far more impulsive than Chloe and I think that takes Chloe by surprise. But with Brian, it’s true love, and sometimes true love doesn’t mean being intimate with that person, but just enjoying the time you have with them.

GD: Not for lack of trying, though.

SS: I mean, come on, he tries. (laughs)

GD: If he wasn’t a good guy though, he would peel out. He’s got a lot going for him, and he does have options. And that’s why I think it’s so beautiful. He does want to pursue this, even if it’s hard.

SS: Yeah. He knows what he believes in. I think it’s a good example for teenagers to see that sometimes defining what love means — I think that can be really hard — and young love especially, trying to find what that means, what you choose to do, where you choose to go. I think it’s a great relationship example for girls. You don’t have to feel like you have to rush. You take your own time. And who knows? Maybe down the road, Brian and Chloe will be able to be together in that way but for now, it’s just making our current circumstances work.

GD: I have three nieces who are watching this show, watching me. And they are going to grow up to be like, “I need a good guy, like that.” The older one is just figuring out boys and it’s scary and I have my baseball bat ready. Even on the other shows, which are awesome and great and fun but it is kind of rare to see this slow…

SS: There’s nothing wrong with moving slow.

GD: We’re on a fast show, too.

SS: It’s okay to be a good girl, and it’s okay to go slow, and it’s okay to not be sure and take your time. This show is loaded with good messages. I’m very proud of it.
